Although aviation only accounted for 3% of global carbon emissions in 2009, the industry’s carbon footprint has increased by 98% between 1990 and 2006, according to figures cited by the International Emissions Trading Association, and is forecast to grow 667% from 2006 to 2050, making aviation a significant source of emissions if left uncapped. The EU has responded by including the industry in its emissions trading system and creating EU aviation allowances (EUAA), a new type of carbon certificate specifically for airline operators. As ICIS launches its first EUAA price assessments, EDCM Editor Marie-Louise du Bois discusses what airline operators need to know about the new credits and scheme.
